when your days have been completed and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you, sprung from your loins, and I will establish his kingdom. He it is who shall build a house for my name, and I will establish his royal throne forever. 2 Samuel 7:12-13 NABRE
King David has taken rest in his house, the Lord God has given him rest from all his enemies. Speaking to the prophet Nathan, David recognizes that he lives in a house of cedar but the ark of God dwells in a tent. David wants to build a house for God. But God speaking though Nathan says He will build a house for David. Not a house in the sense of a building but a line of ancestors that never ends and in particular God will raise up from David a descendant who will be the Messiah, confirming a dynastic succession, specifying the role of the temple among God’s people. For pagans the temple is the center of their world and the focus of the religious spirit, it was there that they kept their gods. In Israel on the other hand, the temple will have quite a different role. God is not content with a temple, He has no need of a house in which to dwell. For God the tent of the ark, the sanctuary and temple eventually in Jerusalem are only signs of His presence among the people, but is not habitation in any sense. Nathan is prophesying that it is not a temple but the Davidic dynasty that is the sign of divine presence and protection that God has set up from the start. Hence God says the house of David, is a dynasty that will eventually provides the Royal King who sits eternally on the throne, Jesus Christ born God man, the Son of God, who will be slain showing God’s and His great love; establishing the Davidic dynasty forever.
