Then he touched their eyes and said, “Let it be done for you according to your faith.” Matthew 9:29 NABRE
Matthew describes several healings by Jesus one after another. In this section with the quoted verse Jesus is pursued by two blind men. Jesus passes by and the two men call out to him, “Son of David, have pity on us!” Their greeting of Jesus is a royal title, with messianic overtones. The messiah is coming from the line of King David. They recognize Jesus is an heir of David and in the way they announce his title they seem to believe that Jesus is the promised Messiah. They also know that Jesus is a great healer. I wonder how they know so much. Without sight they hear and listen to all that is being said. Somehow the buzz was about this great healer who was passing through the area. Jesus is surrounded by crowds always following and the noise of these crowds would have allowed these two blind men to know Jesus is near. They would also know Peter whose house they entered to speak to Jesus was a disciple and that Jesus spent time in his house. Blind people were thought of as people who had offended God and their blindness was their punishment for their wrong doing. They suffer economic and social hardships, repressively. For these two men being healed is like being born a new. They believed Jesus could give them a new life. Jesus touches them but it is their faith that changes their life, their eyes were opened.
The message from Jesus is clear, faith is the healer. We can look at it as if they healed themselves. The lesson for us, we who have a strong faith can heal or as Jesus says “if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move.” (Matthew 17:20)
How is your faith? Can you move a mountain?
