And every day he was teaching in the temple area. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people, meanwhile, were seeking to put him to death, Luke 19:47 NABRE
Jesus arrives in Jerusalem and enters the temple area. The temple has many services, selling of sacrificial lambs, convert money to temple money, a means to pay temple taxes and more. Jesus seeing all these services is moved to action driving them out of the temple, declaring the house of the Lord is a house of prayer not a den of thieves. The services of these people were supported by the leadership of the temple and their reaction to Jesus disrupting these services was one of the things that led them to want Jesus dead. At this moment they are planning how to get to Jesus but Jesus is too well admired by the people in the temple. If the religious leaders do anything to Jesus they are concerned for their own safety and more importantly their role in the temple as leaders. Jesus had just arrived in the city and their minds are already up, they are seeking to put him to death. Undoubtedly, they have heard about His being acclaimed as “king”, and they will use that as a charge against him when they bring him before Pilate. At present there is no way for them to achieve their purpose, because of the people, but they will not stop until they succeed. Soon after this time Jesus is arrested in the night and accused of crimes, which would eventually lead to a Roman crucifixion.
Jesus no doubt is aware of their plans and their attempts to have him put to death but knowing His mission He continues to teach, preach and bring His message to the people visiting the temple and guiding His disciples. Jesus cannot be turned away from doing the will of God, something we should imitate.
Have you been distracted from doing God’s will? Is death a reason to stop doing God’s will?
