“Therefore, from the day we heard this, we do not cease praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding” Colossians 1:9 NABRE
Paul opens his letter to the community at Colossae with greeting, prayers of thanksgiving and prayers of petition. Paul wants the reader to know they have received the gospel, they may grow in the walk of wisdom and they already have Christ. The quoted verse is a prayer of petition, an intercessory prayer from Timothy and Paul for a continuation and growth of the gifts they have received, especially knowledge and power. The prayer for knowledge is in a practical sense to live a true Christian life. Paul prays the Colossians may be filled with the knowledge of God’s will through spiritual wisdom and understanding. This is not some theological hope for knowledge but Paul seeking the people have a practical knowing how to apply truth of God to daily life. Jesus lives a message of obedience and doing the will of the Father. Paul wants the community (and us) to walk the walk not just talk the talk. To live a life according to the gospel, a life that glorifies God through obedience and a life that flourishes through God’s grace and love. Doing God’s will is a known requirement among Christians to live a righteous life. Paul prays we may know the will of God, that we will have spiritual wisdom and understanding, two gifts of the Holy Spirit. This early life of the church realizes its dependence on the Spirit, seeking gifts to live righteous. We can only do God’s will when we know God’s will.
Pray as Paul prays that we may be filled with the knowledge of God’s will through spiritual wisdom and understanding. When we know God’s will pray we may act in it.
What is God’s will for your life? Do you pray to have God’s will revealed?
