For who is greater: the one seated at table or the one who serves? Is it not the one seated at table? I am among you as the one who serves. Luke 22:27 NABRE
Jesus is having a Passover meal with His disciples and speaks about being betrayed by someone who is present with them. It is a discussion that breaks into an argument about who is the greatest. It is not the first time (see Luke 9:46.) It happened on another occasion when Jesus spoke about being betrayed. Unintentionally, the disciples are imitating the Pharisees and scribes who love to vie for seats of honor. In response, Jesus gives the apostles instruction in servant leadership. To enter the kingdom of God we must become “like a child” (see Luke 18:17.) The greatest among us must become as the youngest, the people considered the least in terms of status. This is the opposite of the way of the world, the kings of the Gentiles rule over the people. Rulers exercise authority by becoming benefactors, but their gifts have strings attached, expecting social status and honor in return. Jesus is a different kind of benefactor, He goes about doing good without any worldly expectations. Jesus is the model of a servant leader, He has come to truly serve. As followers of Jesus we are to imitate this behavior.
We are to offer our service to those in need. We should reach out to those who are the lowest and help lift them up from their difficulties. We are to do for others what we would have done for ourselves. We are not always able to do for everyone so following the advice of @andy_stanley, we should do for one what we wish we could for all. Servant leaders serve and in doing so demonstrate a new kind of leadership.
How do you serve others? Do you demonstrate by your example how to be like Jesus?
