Whoever possesses the Son has life; whoever does not possess the Son of God does not have life. 1 John 5:12 NABRE
John in this first letter to his community is giving testimony to Jesus Christ. John has spent three years with Jesus, from the beginning of Jesus’ ministry until he ascended to the Father. John knew Jesus Christ and Says Jesus is love. In this section John speaks about God attesting to Jesus His Son. God testified to Jesus several times, we read God testifying Jesus at His Baptism, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17) and God spoke similarly during a scene known as the transfiguration. Therefore John declares if God gives testimony to Jesus as His Son, then we should receive Jesus as the Son of God as well. John says God has given us eternal life and this life is in His Son. As the Father has life so too does the Son and God has given this eternal life to us through Jesus Christ. This is why believing in the Son is essential. We read, whoever possesses the Son has life. If God’s purpose has been to give us life, to share eternal life with us, then we must have the Son to have this life. So possess Jesus and have life. The converse is stated as well, if you do not possess Jesus then you do not have life. John’s primary theme is life, and this consists of fellowship and communion with God Himself; Father, Son and Spirit. Stealing the common phrase about peace we could say, know Jesus know life, no Jesus no life.
It is important to strive to know Jesus and therefore to have life. In the story of God, it is good to have life because it opens the door to the presence of God. If we think we can live a few years on earth and be satisfied, we may be fooled. Possess Jesus and have life.
Do you possess Jesus? Do you want life?
If we think we can live a few years on earth and be satisfied, we may be fooled. Possess Jesus and have life.
