Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise.” Martha said to him, “I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day.” John 11:23-24 NABRE
Lazarus, the brother of Martha and Mary is dying and Jesus is called to come help. By the time Jesus arrives Lazarus has already died. Martha runs out to meet Jesus and tells Him if He had been there her brother would not have died. Jesus tells her that her brother will rise. And Martha responds that she knows her brother will rise in the resurrection on the last day. Martha knew like many Hebrew people knew and believed that at the end of the present age of suffering and evil, God will raise up and transform those who have died. Ezekiel (37:1-14) and Jonah (2:3-11) articulated texts which support this belief, God will raise the faithful and righteous to a glorified, and perfected life, and they will live forever with God. (In the case of the wicked they are spoken of as being raised up to an everlasting state of punishment.) For the Hebrew people this pointed out two things; God would have ultimate victory over sin and death and resurrection is God’s justice. He rewards the good and punishes the wicked. Jesus will tell Martha that He is the resurrection and ultimately will raise up all in the final days including their judgement. Jesus wants everyone to have faith in Him and to live eternally. If you believe you will enjoy what Jesus has to offer.
Jesus is the one who defeats sin and death. We see Him blaze the way through His death and resurrection. In humanity we have a sinful nature that causes our separation from God and divine life through our sins. Jesus provides the means to grasp divine life and hold it eternally. All who believe will live now and forever. Amen!
Do you believe in Jesus? Do you understand what it means to live eternally?
