Then they said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning [within us] while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?” Luke 24:32 NABRE
A favorite resurrection story of many is the story of two people walking to Emmaus joined by a third person who we discover eventually is the resurrected Christ. These two who some suggest are probably husband and wife are returning home, dejected after an eventful Passover. This Passover they won’t forget because the one they thought was the Messiah was put to death by the Romans after being turned over by the Jewish temple leadership. They had great hope in Jesus and to see him taken and killed is not anything they could have ever imagined. On the journey this third journeymen is first ignorant of the events that had taken place and then takes the two through the scriptures about the Messiah. At His speaking their hearts were on fire, the word from Him brought them alive and changed their hopelessness to hopefulness. Many of the resurrection stories where Christ is in front of one or more of His disciples includes the fact they don’t recognize Him. It says something about the glorified body, it doesn’t look like the same body before resurrection. These two seem to be with Christ for a long time and as they near their home they invite Him in for a meal. It is when Christ broke bread that their eyes were opened to who He truly was and in that moment He vanished from their sight.
Once they recognized Him they said to each other it was easy to see and recognize Him on the journey because what He said made their hearts alive, from dejected to joy, from hopeless to hope. Christ does the same for us, He injects us with life, joy and hope, take Him on your journey.
Do you need hope in your life? Why not ask for help from Jesus or a disciple?
On the journey Christ makes hearts alive, from dejected to joy, from hopeless to hope. Christ does this even for you, He injects us with life, joy and hope, take Him on your journey.
