realizing that you were ransomed from your futile conduct, handed on by your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold but with the precious blood of Christ as of a spotless unblemished lamb. 1 Peter 1:18-19 NABRE
Peter in this section of the letter to the communities in Asia Minor is calling those reading to holiness in conduct. Peter speaks about hope and holiness. First he talks about hope; we are called to set our hope on the revelation of Jesus Christ, we are called to be holy as God the Father is holy, we are called to live reverently in view of Christ’s spotless offering and the result will be our faith and hope are in God. In the quoted verse Peter reminds the readers that they were ransomed with Christ. “Ransom” comes from use in the market place where goods or slaves were bought back for a price. In the scriptures we read about the first Passover, God ransoming or redeeming Israel from the land of Egypt: “Therefore, say to the Israelites: I am the LORD. I will free you from the burdens of the Egyptians and will deliver you from their slavery. I will redeem you by my outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment.” (Exodus 6:6) Peter writes all disciples are ransomed from futile conduct, handed on by their ancestors. Peter wants these communities to renounce their former lifestyle, especially the heritage passed down from fathers and fathers of fathers. We are called to live according to the new birth in Christ. We are ransomed with the spotless blood of the unblemished lamb, just as the Israelites were saved with the blood of a lamb.
Jesus is a lamb led to slaughter, a Suffering Servant (see Isaiah 53) who is an offering for salvation, our redemption. We read because of who Christ is and what He has done we have faith and hope in God, unbroken.
Is your hope in Christ? Do you accept redemption?
