Amos 5:24 – January 20, 2020

Rather let justice surge like waters, and righteousness like an unfailing stream. Amos 5:24 NABRE

Amos was a prophet called to prophesy in the Northern Kingdom of Israel. The Lord choose to make him a spokesperson, to stir up the people’s consciences. His preaching has to do mainly with two subjects; the defense of the poor and the needy against exploitation by the rich and powerful; and the need for external rites and worship to move people’s hearts and encourage them to mend their ways, he wants true liturgical worship, not a service to make people feel like they have honored the Lord. The section with the quoted verse is speaking specifically about the religious service and how it is superficial. In the voice of God we hear, I despise your feasts and take no delight in your solemn assemblies. Even though you offer burnt offerings I will not accept them and the peace offering of your fatted beast I will not look upon. Take away from me the noise of your songs and the melody of your harps. Then the prophet speaks the quoted verse for God, who wants justice and righteousness. God is looking for sacrifice from His people to aid those in need. People who live in comfort and have more than they need while attending service or worship are not seen as just or right by God. If we want to honor God in religious service we must first help those in need, find justice for those treated unjustly. To live comfortably and worship loudly without sacrifice will not be looked upon favorable by God.

The example for how to worship God is Jesus. His life is a life of sacrifice, doing for others, healing and preaching the word God has sent Him to preach. Jesus did not live a life of comfort, rather He associated and helped the needy and the sinner. This is the worship God requires of His people.

How do you worship? Do you help those in need?
