And for this reason we too give thanks to God unceasingly, that, in receiving the word of God from hearing us, you received not a human word but, as it truly is, the word of God, which is now at work in you who believe. 1 Thessalonians 2:13 NABRE
Paul writing to the community in Thessalonica opens with a message of thanksgiving for their faith and then explains how he and his disciples taught them the gospel. They had nothing written they only had the word of Jesus they have heard from the apostles on Jesus life and works, and perhaps some things learned from the Holy Spirit. The Second Letter to the Thessalonians includes, “Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.” (2 Thessalonians 2:15) Paul therefore thanks God, that those who received the word, truly received the word of God. The word of God is living and when it is heard it is alive in the hearer. Paul recognizes that God works in the word and that the message they share is received in the manner God desires its reception. Paul has handed on to them everything that allows the people of God to live their lives in holiness and increasing their faith. Paul believes his preaching is truly the word of God, he faithfully passes it on and he believes God speaks through those who proclaim the gospel. The word of God is always living and alive. (cf. Hebrews 4:12)
Today we can read the gospel accounts of Jesus life. We still hear preaching about the message of Jesus as well. The same word that Paul preached to the communities of the early church is heard today and it is just as alive in us. We hear the message God needs us to hear to live our lives in holiness and to increase our faith.
How often do you hear the word of God? Is God’s word alive in you?
The same word that Paul preached to the communities of the early church is heard today and it is just as alive in us. We hear the message God needs us to hear to live our lives in holiness and to increase our faith.
