And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 NABRE
The people of Israel first made a home for God in a tent. They would pitch a tent and bring the Ark of the Covenant under the tent and this would be the presence of God for them. Eventually the temple was built and the presence of God would be in the Jerusalem temple built by King Solomon. So God dwelt among the people. The new place of God’s dwelling has become the incarnate Word. The Word of God has become flesh. The divine Word that has spent all eternity with God, the Word is God and the Word became flesh, completely human in the man named Jesus. God the creator of all things has now become part of creation and dwells among the people. The incarnate Word is the fullness of God and we know this because John tells us we saw His glory, the glory of God revealed through the Son. This is John’s revelation that God Himself is visible in His Son, Jesus, the Word made flesh. John tells us that Jesus is the Father’s only Son, who is full of grace and truth. We have seen these words or similar words written about God. “All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth” (Psalms 25:10); “For a sun and shield is the LORD God, bestowing all grace and glory.” (Psalms 84:12) When we see grace and truth we know we see God.
When we add glory, an over powering spectacle, we know it can be God alone. This glory was revealed when Solomon built the Jerusalem temple, “Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.” (Exodus 40:34) Now all glory, grace and truth are on Jesus, God in the flesh. God humbles Himself filled with love for us.
Do you believe God became human? Would you recognize grace and truth?
