1 Corinthians 15:57 – November 13, 2019

But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57 NABRE

Paul is writing to the community at Corinth, near the end of the first letter he is speaking to them about the resurrection. Thanks to the resurrection of Jesus Christ we all receive resurrection. We desire to be part of the resurrection of the righteous and live eternally with the saints. Paul indicates anything corruptible cannot inherit the Kingdom of God, and so when we fall asleep, die, we are changed. We will become incorruptible and thus can inherit the Kingdom of God. Paul says, “Death is swallowed up in victory.” Scripture, which predicts death is overthrown, influences Paul but he is saying it very forcefully. Death is swallowed up, it no longer exists, as if it never existed. All that has occurred through death is undone. Essentially, death was introduced in the garden when the first humans disregarded God’s command about which plants to eat and which to avoid. It was a grab for power, they wanted to be like God. In time, Jesus came who is God and lived as those first humans but in the style of life God desired. Jesus’ life and death eliminates sin, the cause of death. Paul is proclaiming Jesus is victory for all. The sting of death is no more. Resurrection is the path for all life. Paul concludes this section by telling the reader to be steadfast and know that whenever they labor for the Lord their labor is never in vain. God takes all death, and turns it into resurrection.

When a loved one dies we miss them and ache for their fleshy presence. But our faith tells us they are resurrected and as followers of Jesus very likely in the resurrection of the righteous.

Do you believe death has been swallowed up? Are you sad when you lose someone you love to death?
