Call to me, and I will answer you; I will tell you great things beyond the reach of your knowledge. Jeremiah 33:3 NABRE
Jeremiah is a major prophet who lived during the time of Jerusalem and the temple’s destruction by the Babylonians. He was a prophet for more than forty years. He told the people they were being punished because they were not faithful to God, but they did not accept his telling of this prophesy. Jeremiah felt the people should accept the rule of the Babylonians as punishment for their unfaithfulness. We see eventually Jeremiah prophesizes the restoration of Jerusalem and the temple. Jeremiah also informs of God’s New Covenant, not a covenant like the old but a new one that God will write in our hearts. It will be a unilateral covenant, which we read Jesus addressing during the night of the Passover meal before His passion and death. “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you” (Luke 22:20) Following his prophesy of the new covenant, Jeremiah begins to speak further on hope. The people should have hope in the Lord, the creator of all things, ruling over all things. He is the source of salvation. He is good and He never forgets those who have recourse to Him. He is ever-merciful and never fully rejects the people. All God is waiting for is the people’s decision to turn back to Him; then He will listen to them and hurry to their aid. We read, “Call to me, and I will answer you;” Judah and Jerusalem are rebuilt and the world will be amazed to see what God has done. The city began to function again and the temple came back to life.
It is the new covenant that invites all nations to participate, Jesus invites all. We can accept God’s covenant and we too will be restored and rebuilt.
Do you trust God is waiting for your call? Do you know you are part of the new covenant?
It is the new covenant that invites all nations to participate, Jesus invites all. We can accept God's covenant and we too will be restored and rebuilt.
