Pride goes before disaster, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18 NABRE
Many see pride as the sin leading to many other sins. Pride changed an angel into Satan. (Isaiah 14:12-15) The fallen in these verses is viewed as Satan who challenges the very throne of God, saying, “I will be like the Most High!” (Isaiah 14:14) Pride led to the disobedience of God’s word in the Garden of Eden. Speaking of the fruit “… when you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods,” (Genesis 3:5) Humanity’s reliance on self with pride led to trying to build heaven on earth in the Tower of Babel story, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky, and so make a name for ourselves;” (Genesis 11:4) Pride leads to wickedness a flood and a new beginning. Pride is a commodity the world offers, today we see it in social media and the constant seeking of approval through “followers” and “likes.” We are warned against chasing things of the world loves, “Do not love the world or the things of the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” (1 John 2:15) Pride is the fertile soil which all other sins grow. My pride pulls me to my false self, the me that puffs up when I hear good things, when I am applauded and given praise. If I come first, it stands God comes second and this is the wrong order to the relationship. A haughty spirit is saying much the same, acting full of pride, a superior attitude, even looking down on others. Those who are prideful and haughty can expect disaster and a fall.
If you are riding with your head high in the clouds, down is the only place you can go. Don’t let pride lead you to a false belief in your importance, you will only discover disappointment.
Are you able to guard against pride? Do you know how to live in humility?
