For this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, as you heard from the beginning, in which you should walk. 2 John 1:6 NABRE
John the leader of certain Christian communities formed on the teaching of Jesus; shared by John, is writing to a community, having some concerns and in particular he wants to speak to them about truth. He refers to the members of the community as children taking a very fatherly attitude towards them. He says he rejoiced when he saw some of the children walking in the truth, as commanded. To walk in the truth means to follow and put into practice the teaching of Jesus. John reminds them that from the beginning he has asked them to love one another. This is the core of what it means to walk in the truth. John then goes deeper into the meaning of love, to walk according to the commandments; possibly referring to the Ten Commandments Moses brought down from God, but then he refers to a single commandment, which they heard from the beginning. John like Jesus counts all the commandments as important but he also knows that following the one commandment of love will encompass all commandments. If we love one another and love God we could never break any of the Ten Commandments. John’s writing says some are following the truth, thus others or some may not be following the truth. So he is challenging the community to challenge itself to get back to the commandment they heard from the beginning, love one another.
To walk in the truth we too must love one another. This is not an option it is a commandment. To be disciples, followers of Jesus it is not optional to love one another. You walk in the truth, have the truth within you, have Christ within you and He wants us to love each other.
Do you walk in the truth? How do you treat your fellow Christians?
You walk in the truth, have the truth within you, have Christ within you and He wants us to love each other.
