Just so, every good tree bears good fruit, and a rotten tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a rotten tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. So by their fruits you will know them. Matthew 7:17-20 NABRE
Jesus is teaching His disciples about the best journey for life. He warns them against false prophets, who will steer them (and us) away from life. Jesus tells them prophets can be known by their fruits. If we evaluate the fruit of a prophet, the fruits of their lives, we should know if they are good to follow. If their work produces good things like grapes and figs, then the prophet is good and trustworthy. However, if their work produces thistles or a harvest of bad fruit, then he or she is a prophet who is a rotten tree and will be cut down and thrown into the fire. Jesus doesn’t say explicitly what conduct constitutes good and bad fruit, we learn in other parts of the gospels what it means to be a true disciple. A true disciple repents and follows the message of Jesus, a true disciple lives for others and doesn’t put themselves first in anything, a true disciple is about love, they love their neighbor and they do all these things with humility. So if we want to be a tree bearing good fruit we must be a follower who imitates Jesus, and bear fruit for all to eat.
They only way people can learn about Jesus who are not part of a church is to see Christians imitating Jesus in their life; at work, at school, shopping, driving, at yoga, the gym, even the coffee shop. So if you really want to be a tree bearing good fruit, always live as a disciple who in your everyday life tries to be an influence.
Do you live fully a Christian life? What do others say about you?
