Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away, Acts 3:19 NABRE
The quoted verse is part of a speech Peter is giving to those who surrounded him in the temple after a man unable to walk was able to stand up and walk through his faith in Christ. Peter explained to the crowd they should not be surprised it is through the power of Jesus, the Messiah that this is possible. He wants them to repent, meaning turn their life around, and become disciples of Jesus. The people were living a life following the law but they were not following the message of love that Jesus declared in the new covenant. So Peter knows the people must change their lives and become fully devoted to Christ and God in a new way. They must listen to Jesus teaching, learn from Him how to live and how to pray and they must follow the will of the Father. This is new for the people listening to Peter, mostly Jews. This change will wipe away their sins, which is common for God; when we acknowledge our wrong doing and change our way, God is ready to forgive. Following also gives them refreshment, a new Spirit will come into them and their life will be renewed, in many ways they will be filled with fire for life and the word of God. Peter tells them the Messiah has come, it is who they have been waiting for and they should follow.
We too are called to dedicate out lives to Christ. Our life is not about us, we become one in Christ and as one we too live refreshed. The Body of Christ needs all of us to participate to be whole. We cannot decide we do not want to be part of the Body, it is like the foot saying I am not a foot. Many are not as dedicated as they should be, repent and accept the word of God completely.
Are you fully a disciple of Christ? How much of your day is devoted to Christian life?
