My God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 NABRE
Paul in closing out the letter to the community at Philippi, shares thanks and final greetings. Paul thanks them for a special gift they have sent him, seemingly financial help. He is writing while imprisoned, it is difficult to be positive where, but there is some suggestion he is writing while imprisoned in Rome. He is very grateful for their help and tells them it is acceptable to God. He shares with them that God is his supplier and theirs. God will provide whatever they need. Telling them that they will receive in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. Paul is highlighting their lived experience in community. They have been blessed by all that community life as provided for them, thanks to God who supplies all their needs. The reference to glory indicates God’s presence, particularly in their worship, which is centered on the living Christ Jesus. Their worship and their life centered on Christ draws God’s presence, providing all they need to live and grow as an ecclesial community. It is very much a blessing and Paul is acknowledging that blessing in his writing to them.
We should get a clear message that we need to be formed around Christian community, living a life of community, dependent on one another and God. With Christ as the center of the community we should give and receive knowing we will be blessed with an abundance from a God of abundance. These days life has flipped, we live in the world and spend an hour a week in Christian community. We should learn from the Philippians who lived in community and stepped out in the world only to share the message of Jesus.
Do you feel called to Christian community? Could you spend more time living your faith in community?
