Do not let this book of the law depart from your lips. Recite it by day and by night, that you may carefully observe all that is written in it; then you will attain your goal; then you will succeed. Joshua 1:8 NABRE
Joshua takes over the leadership of the Israelites following Moses. The Book of Joshua speaks about the taking of the land of Canaan and making it Israel. The process is supported by God and happens quickly with an orderly disposition of the land to the twelve tribes. The book shows not only that Joshua carries on the work of Moses but how the moving into the land of Canaan continues the Exodus of Egypt. It is a demonstration of God’s faithfulness to the people. God’s agreement with the people requires the people depend on Him, that they may not become affluent from war treasure and that the people follow the law. The book opens with God making Joshua aware of His support as He did with Moses and that Joshua should be strong and steadfast. As we read in the quoted verse Joshua should be sure to recite the law consistently and observe all that is written. If Joshua follows the Lord’s instruction he will succeed and attain the goal assigned to him. God seeks to have Joshua’s obedience and trust. As God trusted Moses He will support and trust Joshua in the same way. The relationship between God and Joshua goes two ways. Through action and deed they come to rely on one another. While it seems the conquest of Canaan seemed swift it was accomplished as the two grew together.
As God and Joshua grew in trust, we must do the same with God. Being obedient to God, trusting His word and deed allows God to become more dependent on us. As we grow in relationship with God, we will succeed and attain our goal.
Do you work to gain God’s trust? Do you see God’s handiwork in your life as you become close to God?
As God and Joshua grew in trust, we must do the same with God. Being obedient to God, trusting His word and deed allows God to become more dependent on us.
