Ah, my Lord GOD! You made the heavens and the earth with your great power and your outstretched arm; nothing is too difficult for you. Jeremiah 32:17 NABRE
Jeremiah was a prophet during the time of the Babylonian destruction of the holy city. God foretold through Jeremiah that He would use the new Babylonian kingdom to punish Judah for its unfaithfulness. But God knew their punishment would not be the end of Jerusalem, in fact God will use the Persian kingdom many years later to assist in the return of the deported Israelites to Jerusalem. God wants to show there is hope and he has Jeremiah buy a field even though it was in territory already captured by Babylon and knowing that the Babylonians were at the gates poised to destroy the city of Jerusalem. Jeremiah trust God and buys the land, but he prays to the Lord about the danger that surrounds them. That prayer includes the quoted verse. God you made heaven and earth with your great power and your outstretched arms; nothing is too difficult for you. Imagine the faith of Jeremiah, watching everything he loves being destroyed, his friends and family being taken captive, and yet he does not doubt God or God’s plan. The Lord’s reply confirms what He had already told Jeremiah, the Lord directs human events and the Babylonians are used by God as punishment for Judah.
The faith of Jeremiah is that faith we followers should have in God. We should spend our last money in what appears to be a lost cause if God asks. We should put God in all we do, such that whatever we are doing God can help and guide us. We don’t need to change what we do, just who we include in the doing. Faith is shown in action, act with God by your side.
Can you compare your faith to that of Jeremiah who trusted God even when he thought all was lost? Would you give away the last of your margin if God asks?
