When you pass through waters, I will be with you; through rivers, you shall not be swept away. When you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, nor will flames consume you. Isaiah 43:2 NABRE
God chose Israel and He has a special love for His people. This hymn from Isaiah shows God’s loving care as He brings them out of captivity in Babylon. His care stems from His mercy; He is steadfast in His love for the people, despite their faults. This hymn is a shout for joy, acknowledging the redemption that God brings. God uses special words to proclaim his love for His people, He says, my sons, my daughters; everyone is called by name, God’s witnesses, His servants whom He has chosen. Isaiah opens the hymn with tender words; the Lord says, I created you, I formed you, fear not, I have redeemed you, I have called you by name and you are mine. God goes on to tell them He is with them, passing through water, through rivers, they will not be swept away. If they walk through fire they will not be burned, nor consumed by the flames. God will protect His people from every kind of calamity, or trouble. Even when destructive forces are on the people, they will not be hurt for God will protect them. God says, I am the Lord your God, the Holy one of Israel, your Savior. Nothing can separate God from His people and nothing the people do will ever have God turn from them. God loves His people and will do all that is necessary to protect them.
If we trust in God, if we turn our lives over to God, we will be protected, we will be loved by a tender caring God who does everything to show mercy to His people. With the coming of Jesus the scope of those God claims to be His people included the entire world. We are all formed by God and loved.
Do you trust in the love of God? Are you able to recognized you were formed by God?
