No foul language should come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for needed edification, that it may impart grace to those who hear. Ephesians 4:29 NABRE
Paul in the section with the quoted verse is speaking to the Ephesians about a new way of living. Christians should break with immoral conduct of the surrounding culture. The Christian life follows a fundamental change brought about by faith and baptism, through which we have become a new person in Christ. We see in the quoted verse that Paul is addressing specific patterns of appropriate behavior. He tells them to speak truth to one another because they are members of one another. It is okay to get angry but don’t sin. The thief must no longer steal. No one should use foul language, but only speak to one another for edification that what we say to one another may impart grace. Foul language for Paul is not merely vulgarity but includes harmful speech, such as gossip and backbiting that leave a poisonous relationship. Rather Christians should speak in constructive ways that respond to people’s needs and allows the Lord to speak kind and wise words through them to impart grace.
We should always finds ways to lift one another up. To bring cheer and good feelings into others’ lives. We should never do anything to tear someone down, no matter how we feel they have treated us. We don’t really understand another person’s walk with Christ or their life so we should never take anything from them as though it is meant to be hurtful or damaging and respond in anger or revenge. This is not the behavior of a Christian and so we should not respond in any negative manner. Sometimes it means we have to bite our tongue. But better to hold back a hurtful comment than create real pain in someone’s life.
