All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 NABRE
In the quoted verse of the Letter to Timothy we have a message about the usefulness of scripture. What does scripture refer to? Certainly what we call the Old Testament would be included, those writings that the Jews considered inspired by God. At the time of this letter not much in the way of apostolic writings would be available but Paul would have considered them scripture as he included it in his preaching. His teaching and letters he considered inspired. Christians have always found Scripture to be an inexhaustible source of spiritual nourishment, it is divinely inspired. It is not only inspired when it is being written by God breathing through the writers, but also while it is being read, by God breathing through the Scripture and the Scripture breathing God. Beyond speaking about inspiration Paul writes about the usefulness of Scripture. It can be used to refute those who don’t believe in the faith. It can be used to correct those who may have made an error or for moral reform. It can be training to be righteous as well, to be made right in front of God. Thus anyone who belongs to God will be competent and ready to do every good work.
There is so much richness in the Scriptures. It is the place to turn for inspiration. We should spend some time every day with the word of God. We can become wiser in the things of God and we can come to know God better. Much of what is considered Scripture tells the story of God in history until the founding of churches under the title Christian. Many say there is nothing new to be told.
