The righteous cry out, the LORD hears and he rescues them from all their afflictions. Psalms 34:18 NABRE
Psalm 34 invites us to taste and see the goodness of the Lord. It begins with the resolve to praise the Lord and inviting the afflicted to unite themselves to God. The rest of the Psalm spells out why they should do this. The author tells of his personal experience of salvation and based on this invites others to experience God’s goodness and to revere Him. The author tells the reader to listen to God and to reflect on how He will lead them to a good life. He says the Lord sees the righteous and listens to them, saving those who appeal to Him for the Lord always looks after the righteous but allows the impious to be slain by their evildoing. The quoted verse compels those who work toward righteousness, that they are not dependent on good conduct, but what does identify the just person is their repentance and humble recourse to the Lord. The Lord hears those righteous crying for help and delivers them out of their troubles. The psalm follows this verse with a statement that the Lord is near the brokenhearted and saves those who have had their spirit crushed. The Lord hears the cry of those who sincerely call out in need. The Lord will deliver them from their troubles.
God is always peering into our heart. If we are authentically trying to be good, working through the things that pull us away from being totally righteous, God will know and will help us. The wise know their conduct doesn’t define them, they can repent and be welcomed by God. God does everything to bring us toward Him when that is what we desire.
Do you let your bad act or failure define you? Are you open to a God who forgives constantly?
