A mild answer turns back wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1 NABRE
A gentle approach is wise; follower of God or not. Solomon is not advising that we compromise truth and say what is wrong is really right. Rather, he is counselling us to have a gentle spirit and a conciliatory attitude when we disagree with others. This approach can make whatever issue less heated and help us to settle the matter more peacefully. The key is the condition of the heart. If there is anger in the heart, or a desire to fight, then our words will be destructive and not healing. In the secular world we are told to fight for our rights, to fight for what is rightfully ours, that every disagreement must be turned into a win/lose situation that must be won. Heavenly wisdom seeks a win/win that strives to preserve the unity of Spirit through the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3.) The wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without inconstancy or insincerity. (James 3:17) Our attitude should be one that puts others first, more concerned about them as children of God than our own desire to be right or win, which is only an act of soothing the ego. Do nothing out of selfishness or our out vainglory, rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourself, each looking out not for his own interests, but [also] everyone for those of others. (Philippians 2:3-4) This is the attitude that Jesus lived and taught, it should be our attitude as His followers.
We often hear or read, people won’t remember what you said, or what you did but they will remember how you made them feel. Followers of Christ, should follow the model of Good Friday and Holy Saturday, God putting others first, even onto death.
Do you like to win arguments or friends? Can you be gentle of heart?
