If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you. Romans 8:11 NABRE
Paul in this letter to the community at Rome is said to be giving an introduction for an upcoming visit. However many scholars call this letter one of Paul’s richest theological treatise with chapter 8 being something truly special. The opening of the chapter addresses the divine work of the Spirit. Paul writes about the Spirit dwelling in followers of Christ, those who have become a new creation in Christ (as Paul describes in 2 Corinthians 5:17.) In the journey to discipleship as we claim to be followers of Jesus and in some way accepting Him; through Baptism, or some declaration, even by those who receive Confirmation; we become a new creation in Christ, we receive the Spirit of Christ. We are new creations because the Spirit dwells in us. This is the Spirit that has raised Jesus from the dead and if the Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is in us than that Spirit will give us life as well. Prior to the quoted verse Paul writes whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him. Paul also says even if our body dies, our spirit is alive because of the righteousness of God.
In sending Jesus, God provides the means for death to be overcome, as He did with Jesus resurrection. As followers of Jesus we have the Spirit dwelling in us, animating us until a time in the future when there is a resurrection of the dead. At this time, all who are made righteous through God will be reunited with their body and spirit which is always alive. Without the Spirit we die, with the Spirit we live forever
Do you follow Jesus? Do you rely on the Spirit within you?
