The beginning of wisdom is: get wisdom; whatever else you get, get understanding. Proverbs 4:7 NABRE
This fourth proverb begins with a traditional call to acquire wisdom. Wisdom is passed on from one generation to the next and the proverb is exhorting the reader to acquire wisdom. Wisdom is not the result of personal effort alone it is also a gift from God that comes through human instruction. We are born into a family and in a family we grow. From birth we are immersed into traditions which give language, cultural formation and a range of teachings picked up almost instinctively. We can think of a father telling his son to treat wisdom the way he would treat his mother, sister, or wife; love her, honor her, embrace her, exult her. Wisdom is personified as a beautiful woman who invites us to her lavish banquet. Folly is more like a temptress, pulling us toward poverty and death. The one you love more will control your life. Embrace Wisdom and you will have security, honor and understanding. We see in the quoted verse that the beginning of wisdom, is to get (seek) Wisdom, to know we want her and that she is good for us. When we get Wisdom then understanding will come our way. We can pick up so much more when we are able to intuit what is happening, through observation and discernment. Once we begin to become wise we know to prize Wisdom, embrace her, and love her. Once we have entered into this faithful relationship with Wisdom, she will commit herself to us.
Wisdom is the means by which we are opened to know all about God and Jesus. We learn from bible stories and from teachings passed down from authority. When this teaching has begun and we begin to get Wisdom, the Father through Wisdom will grace us with more and more understanding.
Do you seek wisdom? Do you look toward God’s grace to become wise?
