Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him. John 14:21 NABRE
John has captured Jesus farewell discourse to His followers. His departing words are concerned with the disciples’ life after the Resurrection and Ascension. Jesus’ final testament has many standard features; announcement of His departure, words of consolation, final instructions, warnings about coming hardships, and securing the communities future needs. In the section containing the quoted verse Jesus promises an Advocate, the first of five promises about the Holy Spirit. Jesus tells them the world does not know the Spirit and so does not believe in Him but the disciples know the Spirit, who remains in, dwells in, them. Jesus tells them the Father is in Him and He in the Father, and they are in Jesus too. It is a powerful message telling all to look for God inside yourself, and inside one another. Jesus tells them, those who keep my commandments, are those who demonstrate they love Him. Jesus requires action on our part, particularly following His instruction. When we do act on behalf of Jesus, we have His love. This love creates a trinity of love; we love Jesus, Jesus loves us and so the Father loves us. The connection, or the cord that keeps us all together is love. When we love we tie ourselves to God, Jesus and one another.
We must look inside ourselves to discover Father, Son and Spirit. When we love we find them. We love Jesus by doing what he wants. Showing our love for Jesus, the Father loves us. In all we do we have an Advocate who aides us. Let the Kingdom of God radiate from you, others will see and want to be like you.
Do you follow Jesus’ commandments? Do you look within to find God?
We must look inside ourselves to discover Father, Son and Spirit. When we love we find them. We love Jesus by doing what he wants.
