The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. John 1:9 NABRE
John introduces the last and perhaps greatest prophet, John the Baptist, who was sent from God. The Baptist’s primary role in John’s Gospel is to be a witness to Jesus. John writes, the Baptist was not the light but came to testify to the light. This testimony was so that all might believe through him. The Gospel of John speaks about the presence of the Light (or Word) in creation. The Gospel speaks of creation generally; “The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.” All humans are illuminated by divine light, particularly in our capacity to reason and to know the truth. We can know truth and discern good from evil by our own natural abilities, which are gifts from God. Wherever there is truth or goodness in the world, there is a trace of the divine Word. Jesus is the true light, He is the light to illuminate everyone. But many are blind to His light, they prefer copies of the light; Moses, the Law, Sunday obligation, it is what they know. People become shackled by religious tradition and cannot understand the truth that Jesus is the Light. Religious people are more interested in proving they can do the things of the law, they can meet and beat some performance matrix, and thinking if they score high on the heaven SAT’s God is pleased with them. So when the Light came to them, they put Him to death.
Jesus is the Messiah who comes to His people and they do not know Him. Religious people would rather perform rituals, and pray all the correct prayers to earn their way into heaven. But God sent the Light, the Word, so we have life. We simply must accept. The Law, the Church, they are means, containers to prepare us to know and accept Jesus, they are not the destination.
Why do you go to Church? Why do you pray?
