Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will act. Psalms 37:5 NABRE
Psalm 37 reflects on the power and apparent success that evildoers manage to have. Set against doing good everything seems to work out well for them. It deals with an apparent contradiction by showing their lives will end in failure and by exhorting the righteous to do good. The psalm begins with a teacher exhorting his disciple to be patient and to trust in God when he notices evildoers are prosperous and successful. Disciples should commit to the Lord, trust in the Lord and God will act on their behalf. Later in the psalm disciples are encouraged to do good, and to follow the example of the blameless. We can hear in this psalm the voice of Jesus, “Blessed are the meek, they will inherit the land.” (Matthew 5:5) Those who trust God are not put off by the behavior of the wicked. God gives a share in the good things of salvation to those who trust in Him and keep His commandments. Those who act violently and unjustly to make themselves rich in earthly goods will receive no such reward. Living more for their stuff than any bigger cause they can never be truly happy. We are happy, and joyful when our life has meaning, when what we are doing is bigger than ourselves, bigger than any single thing we could have or own. A life without meaning, is meaningless.
Trusting in God and ignoring what others have or have done to obtain what they have, leads to a better life. This psalm points out there are inequities but those who trust in God can be sure that He will act in their behalf. Disciples will have a better life because a life with God is the best way to live.
Are you envious of others and what they have? Do you trust God and believe He will act in your life when you are committed to Him?
We are happy, and joyful when our life has meaning, when what we are doing is bigger than ourselves, bigger than any single thing we could have or own. A life without meaning, is meaningless.
