Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff comfort me. Psalms 23:4 NABRE
Psalm 23 proclaims the nearness of God. The psalm speaks of the Lord as a shepherd. A role that would be easily understood at the time and became even more meaningful when Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd.” (John 10:11) The psalm’s reference to the table also brings us to Jesus who has already prepared the banquet table for us. Jesus wants to guide us in hope so we reach green pastures; His Kingdom which is at the heart of Psalm 23. This is a psalm that spells out God’s relationship with humanity. We are secure, protected and aided under God’s authority. Jesus the Good Shepherd, shows even if the flock is scattered He will go after all, including the lost and draw all people to Himself. Jesus enters humanity, in the form of a slave, uniting Himself to all of humanity, ultimately dying and rising again. This psalm speaks of a God who will do anything to demonstrate His love for everyone. There is nothing that God will not do to prove how important we are to Him and how much He wants us to be with Him, happy, free and comforted. We do walk toward death, but have no fear because Jesus walked there before us and showed us we will be safe, we will be in green pastures, guided and protected by the Good Shepherd.
In this psalm we discover our shepherd who invites us to the banquet, as was modeled for us by the Good Shepherd before dying. Life is a feast, the most delicious and rousing feast ever. God will do anything to show we are desired at the banquet, we only need accept. Live your life saying yes to the shepherd and the banquet.
