For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 NABRE
A child is born, a son given to us, a gift from God, because it is a sign that God is present among His people. Listening to this prophecy from Isaiah in the time it was proclaimed the child embraces all the typical features of Israel’s illustrious forbearers. Wonderful Counselor is the wisdom of Solomon; Mighty God represents the skill of David; Everlasting Father is Moses a liberator, guide, father of the people; Prince of Peace represents the virtues of the early patriarchs who made peace pacts, (see Genesis 21:22-34, 26:15-35, 23:6). All patriarchs for Israel and reminders of times when God took care of the people.
Today we find them appropriate only for Jesus. He is Wonderful in his birth. Counselor in his preaching. God in His works. Mighty in the Passion. Everlasting Father in the resurrection. Prince of Peace in eternal happiness. But we can also see Jesus as a new type of patriarch, Jesus is a type Moses, a type of Solomon, a type of David and certainly a type of leader who wants peace. Jesus is the fulfillment of all those who came before him to bring salvation to the people. But he is the perfect offering, the perfect gift. He doesn’t save us from slavery, or captivity, or from making mistakes, or war, Jesus saves us from death. We have life eternal through the salvation that Jesus offers. Thank you Jesus. Of course we have learned to think of Christmas hearing these titles. Perhaps from hearing Handel’s Messiah played during Christmas which has lyrics from this passage of Isaiah.
If you need a prayer today, let me know I would be happy to pray for you.
A blessed and joyful Christmas and thank you for following.
