I look to you in the sanctuary to see your power and glory. For your love is better than life; my lips shall ever praise you! Psalms 63:3-4 NABRE
This psalm of King David is a prayer that opens with the psalmist’s fervent desire to be with God. He recalls the times he spent in God’s presence in the sanctuary and speaks of how God keeps his presence in mind during the night. The psalmist enemies will be punished and the king will rejoice at this victory over them. The quoted verse speaks about the psalmist finding God in the sanctuary. He has found God there before and he realizes there is nothing to compare with finding God, even life itself does not compare. The psalmist loves God and has such a desire for God that he cannot be satisfied or content until he has full possession of God. Anything that is not God does not satisfy him and in fact increases his desire for God even more.
We are not at home on the earth, our home is with God. In life we have no way to be in possession of God fully, we constantly yearn for more. We might chase things thinking they will satisfy; drugs, alcohol, pornography, sex, money, power, just stuff, but always we discover no matter how much of the “thing” we accumulate, we are still not satisfied. We can only be fulfilled by total union with our creator, God. Since what we chase does not satisfy, and in fact in certain cases where we become addicted, it can be harmful, we must be careful. The desire for more, leads to more desire. We need to lead a life in constant awareness of how simple wants, turn into bigger wants, and then somehow they become needs. Nothing we attain here, in this place not naturally our home, can make us truly happy. If it could we would be able to take it with us when we leave here. Be careful, live simply.
What things do you chase? Can you decide to live more simply?
The desire for more, leads to more desire. We need to lead a life in constant awareness of how simple wants, turn into bigger wants, and then somehow they become needs.
