Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! 2 Corinthians 9:15 NABRE
In chapter nine of the Second Letter to the Corinthians Paul is asking the community to be generous and in particular to be generous in giving to the collection for the church in Jerusalem. Paul is exhorting them to have their collection ready when he arrives so that it is truly given as a blessing. Paul affirms that God is the source of all blessings and can be counted on to provide resources for the community for their generosity. Paul also describes the spiritual fruits from the collection which is a tribute of praise and thanksgiving to God. Paul tells the community they are enriched by generosity, and through their service for not only supplying for the needs of others but as an act of thanksgiving to God. As they obediently give they receive grace from God. For all this Paul proclaims; Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! Even Paul in his day had to ask for money. He tried to avoid needing money but when he did have to ask he was asking in the name of God. God will be grateful for any contribution, thus those who give receive grace and the thanks of a grateful God.
Sometimes we are asked for money so much we become numb to “the ask” and rarely give. We decide where we will contribute our excess and turn a cold shoulder to any others in need. This is the least generous way of giving. Our giving should be giving to God. Knowing all we have is a resource that is loaned us from God when we give we give what is God’s. We should give first and live on the rest. We cannot out give God, so whatever we give we will receive much more in return. This change could simply be a change in approach, give to God, first. Start small, work up your giving to ten percent. Then say thanks be to God!
Do you have any regular giving? Do you tithe at all?
