Therefore, our God, we give you thanks and we praise the majesty of your name. 1 Chronicles 29:13
The Chronicles are a general collection of historical writings of the chosen people from the time of Adam through the rebuilding of the temple after the return of the exiles. This history includes the books of Ezra and Nehemiah both a continuation of Chronicles taking the history through 445 BC. These writings seem to repeat history from Samuel and Kings, but they are a reinterpretation and update of previous history. Chapter twenty-nine is the ending section of the first part of Chronicles which closes with the death of King David. The ending section reads like David’s farewell. It contains a prayer from David, which includes solemn praise for God, David’s recognition of his personal limitations and a plea for perseverance in righteousness. The praises for God begin; “Blessed are you Lord, God of Israel our father, from eternity to eternity.” It continues proclaiming all greatness in God and then the quoted verse thanking God and praising His name. David as King and the people know they are dependent on God. Through their history they have witnessed first hand God’s presence in their lives. For them all glory, praise and thanks go to God. Although they are a flawed nation and make many mistakes they still return to the realization that God is everything in their lives.
We have less examples day to day of God’s presence in our lives. We think we are in control many of the times that good happens. But like the history we read in Chronicles, our lives today are as dependent on God. We should follow the example of David and take time to be thankful for all we have and give glory to God for His ever presence.
Do you know the things to be thankful for in your life? If all life is a gift who do you thank?
But like the history we read in Chronicles, our lives today are as dependent on God. We should follow the example of David and take time to be thankful for all we have and give glory to God for His ever presence.
