The result of humility and fear of the LORD is riches, honor and life. Proverbs 22:4 NABRE
This proverb is one attributed to Solomon, who was considered one of the wisest men because he asked God for wisdom and it was given him. But the work of the Spirit seems to be contained in this message. When we have fear of the LORD, in biblical terms to respect the LORD, we give God glory and honor. To have humility is to place dependence on God, to know that God the creator will care for us, and wants our happiness. The opposite of humility is pride, it is the original sin, to think we are better than God. If we live with humility and fear we will receive riches, honor and life. These gifts come from God and they are not like worldly gifts, these are gifts that only can be received from God. To have riches is to have riches of grace, it is by grace we are saved, grace is a special blessing from God and grace is freely given by God. To have honor is to be respected and given authority by God. God is pointing at us and saying you are special, and even men will give you honor. To have life is to have everlasting life, to live eternally, which we only do with God. This proverb encourages us to respect and honor God and God will give grace, give us authority and everlasting life as a reward.
When we depend on God, and give God respect we are living most fruitfully. We try to live as though we are taking care of ourselves, and we can do well in self-care. But God has said to us, don’t worry, let me care for you, let my grace bless you, let me be with you eternally. We can never achieve this on our own, these gifts are from God. With God’s gifts we are rich, on our own we merely survive. Bring your life to God with humility and fear.
Can you let go and let God take care of you? How hard do you work to maintain your own control?
God has said to us, don’t worry, let me care for you, let my grace bless you, let me be with you eternally. We can never achieve this on our own, these gifts are from God. With God’s gifts we are rich, on our own we merely survive.
