It shatters my bones, when my adversaries reproach me, when they say to me every day: “Where is your God?” Psalms 42:11 NABRE
Psalm 42 seems to come from a priest longing to be back in the temple with God. It opens with a line of vitality, “As the deer longs for the streams of water, so my soul longs for you, O God.” God is needed as much as water for life. The psalm is about longing, trusting and doubt; it is someone vacillating between doubt and hope. It can be any follower of Jesus who would proclaim this type of anguish and then hope. The question is asked a couple of times in the psalm, “Where is your God?” even the psalmist says “why do you forget me?” It is something that plagues us; God if you exist give us a sign, do something fantastic so we may believe and convince others to believe. The psalmist says hearing this question so much is like breaking a bone, the pain is almost unbearable. But, in the end by faith the psalmist is waiting for and praising God again. In our life God is present through faith; we must believe in God, have faith and put our faith into action. We constantly long for God acting in our life in every difficult situation. But are we thankful when God receives us?
Our faith in God is what people must see to believe. God can do miracles all day, but it is the faith of believers that brings others to belief. A miracle is nice, but if it helps one person it doesn’t do much for universal faith. Belief encourages belief; it is the way of any movement. It is the life of the church, beginning with twelve plus believers, growing to almost two million believers today. You must believe and express your belief, so others may follow.
Do you long for a more tangible God, one you can touch? How does your life express faith so that others may believe?
