Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him. John 3:36 NABRE
The good news from John tells the life of Jesus through seven signs. It begins with the focus on John the Baptist, who announces the coming of one from above. The passage which includes today’s quoted verse is John announcing his own decreasing and pushing the focus on the one from above. It continues to speak about the relationship between the Father and the Son, and says the Father has given everything to the Son. Then we read, whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. This belief is more than thinking, it does include intellectual assent and fidelity to put belief into action but it also must be a personal acceptance of Jesus. It is us saying Jesus we want what you offer and we will do what you ask to receive what you offer. Then the verse continues to say whoever disobeys the Son will not receive what the Son offers. Of course this makes sense, if we don’t accept the Son than we would not accept what the Son offers. The life of one who does not accept the Son is a life of the flesh, someone who wants to do whatever they want. This can be seen as a selfishness which is contrary to our Father who wants us to be united, to be together.
As followers of Jesus we accept the Son and obey because of our acceptance. Others who don’t accept, are not sent anywhere, they are choosing to be separate from Jesus. Maybe they don’t know what this entails, or don’t know they can choose acceptance, choosing through nothingness. We as followers must live our acceptance publicly, allowing others to see what we have accepted. Then they can know new life, too.
Do you live your acceptance publicly for all to see? Are you an influence for those who don’t know Jesus?
As followers of Jesus we accept the Son and obey because of our acceptance. Others who don’t accept, are not sent anywhere, they are choosing to be separate from Jesus.
