Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. Ephesians 6:10 NABRE
The Letter to the Ephesians has been called elegant and polished. Of Paul’s writings only Romans can match as a candidate for exercising the most influence on Christian thought and spirituality. It depicts Christ as the head of creation and the Church, it speaks of grace and salvation, resurrection, unity in Christ for Gentile and Jew and a comparison of marriage, Christ and the Church. Nearing the end of this strong letter Paul is calling us into action. He is motivating those hearing to stay strong and fight. We read it in the quoted verse, draw strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. Paul knows the enemy is battling the plans of Christ for His church. Paul knows it won’t be easy for us to stay on course. So rather than depend on our own strength, we must rely on Christ and His strength. We do this by knowing we are Christ’s and we should grow in every way to be Christ. We are united to Christ’s mighty power, the power that raised Him from the dead. This strength is available and this power is ours, if we simply rely on the Lord. The evil one has gained power because of sin but Christ has defeated evil. We can expect difficulty and challenges as followers of Jesus. But never give in, always rely on Jesus.
We struggle to give up control, to think we are not in charge. God allows us to be free and choose however we wish. The best choice is to use our freedom to choose God and serve others. There are times when Christ’s strength is powerful in us, in these moments reach out and help the other. When we are weak we can expect Christ’s power to come to us through a fellow Christian sibling.
Can you lay all your needs on Jesus? When you are strong do you reach out to help? Can you accept help when you need it?
