God has made everything appropriate to its time, but has put the timeless into their hearts so they cannot find out, from beginning to end, the work which God has done. Ecclesiastes 3:11 NABRE
The book of Ecclesiastes is a wisdom book that is narrated by someone known as the Preacher. It is a wisdom book read during certain Jewish feast days. Ecclesiastes is read during the feast of Tabernacles which is a feast rejoicing and thanking God for the good things of the harvest. Chapter three opens with verses that indicate that everything happens in a particular season, there is a time for everything under the sun. Following the verses on time the Preacher speaks about man’s business for God. Man should be pleased to know his work for God contributes to God’s overall plan. Life is meant for joy and there is no reason for us to think we need to wait until heaven to be joyful. Man knows about eternity, but does not know how their work contributes in conclusion. God is pleased with man’s contribution. There are seasons and cycles and we contribute to God’s work in the appropriate season or cycle. We may think we are not big enough to be critical to God’s work, but God needs us. No contribution is too small. We go through our entire life not knowing how we help, but by living joyfully and prayerfully the work we do has its effect in God’s overall plan.
How can the creator of the universe be dependent on man? Man doesn’t know the beginning or the end, the depth or breath of time but living as dedicated followers we are helpers. We may not know how God depends on what we do, or what contribution we may have overall but it is important that we do what we do. And when we do what we do God is pleased. Being part of something bigger than ourselves brings us fulfillment.
Do you wish to work for God? Can you find joy in the work of God? Do you trust what you do is necessary?
We go through our entire life not knowing how we help, but by living joyfully and prayerfully the work we do has its effect in God’s overall plan.
