The LORD, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior, Who will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you in his love, Who will sing joyfully because of you, Zephaniah 3:17 NABRE
.
Zephaniah is a prophet who ministered in Jerusalem in the beginning years of 600 BC. The central idea of his prophecy was around the day of Judgement. His prophecy begins warning of the wrath of the Lord over the wrong doing of mankind. Destruction is threatened as a sentence for sin. But the prophecy also includes a call to conversion. Seeking the Lord with all humility can be a saving act. A certain remnant, those who convert from sinfulness are saved. In this moment the prophet prays a psalm of joy. The Lord has taken away judgement and they need not fear. We read the quoted verse; The LORD, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior, who will rejoice over you with gladness, renew His love and sing joyfully to you. It is a usual pattern, the people sin, God allows some kind of lesson or destruction to help them see their sinfulness, and in their conversion and return to holiness God rejoices, sings, loves and is glad. God wants to be our savior, bringing His children close to him. It is a story of the Hebrew people but it is also our story. We have moments when we sin and fall away from God. While walking without God we might receive some lesson which brings us to our knees and in that moment we remember God and our need for Him.
God wants us to know He will do anything for us, always. But we must choose to be with God and show this choice through love and obedience. God cannot help us if we turn away and think we can do it on our own. God responds to our ask. Turn to God with all your heart.
Do you recognize your need for God daily? How difficult does life have to get for you to get on your knees?
