Say to the LORD, “My refuge and fortress, my God in whom I trust.” Psalms 91:2 NABRE
Psalm 91 is fully about a person protected by the LORD. Under the LORD’s protection there is no reason to fear anything. The psalm opens with the declaration that one who dwells in the shelter of God and abides Him will say, “My refuge and fortress, my God in whom I trust.” The psalm continues, describing situations in which God comes to the rescue; illness, persecution, attacks, misfortune. Others may be struck down by these things but the person who makes the LORD their refuge will never worry. The LORD loves everyone under His protection and knows them by name. When the LORD calls you, answer Him, in trouble be with Him, you will always be rescued, living a long life, experiencing salvation. This psalm is a prayer to recite daily. Its promise is constant protection. As a prayer we can internalize it bringing the LORD and hope into every cell of our being, filling our heart. Our relationship with the LORD becomes one of deep friendship, a friend who can do anything, who loves us more than anyone and wants everything for us, always.
Near the end of the psalm there is a line, “I will be with him in trouble.” There are those who say if I can be with the LORD in trouble then I wish I would always be in trouble. There is truth to this. We recognize when we have no obstacles or challenges in life, everything going our way, the LORD can be pushed aside. But in moments of tragedy, illness, broken relationship, money issues, trouble with the law, we tend to seek the LORD for help. It would seem a life of constant trouble is a life with the LORD always. But don’t pray for trouble.
Are your plans made so that you have security? Do you live trusting that God will be your buffer against all difficultly?
