Certain Christians associate this book with the Hebrew Scriptures, though it is not contained within the Hebrew Bible, it is a Wisdom book, which opens speaking about all Wisdom having is fullness in God, it is viewed as a sort of book of maximums but captures history as well. It is known by many titles, “Instructions of Ben Sirach,” or “Book of Instruction,” “The Wisdom of Jesus, son of Sirach,” or “Wisdom of Sirach.” It is even known as “Ecclesiasticus,” however the title Sirach has gained popularity since the third century. It is a book written by Jesus ben Sirach, who knowing the law and the prophets is led to write something pertaining to the instruction of wisdom, so those who love learning may make greater progress in living according to the law. Written by Jesus ben Sirach the prologue and translation are the work of his unnamed grandson.
The quoted chapter is a summary of the lives of the prophets Elijah and Elisha. It highlights Elijah’s mission to turn hearts to the father, to his sons and to placate God’s wrath.
