John answered and said, “No one can receive anything except what has been given him from heaven” John 3:27 NABRE
Jesus enters an area near John the Baptist and begins baptizing people. His actions create some questions in the mind of John the Baptist’s disciples, they wonder why Jesus is baptizing and they ask John the Baptist what is going on with Him. John declares this profound theological message, no one can receive anything unless it comes from God. John goes on to explain the relationship between Jesus and himself, Jesus is the bridegroom and John is the best man. John feels blessed to have been a part of God’s plan to announce to others the good news of the coming Messiah. But now it is time to celebrate the presence of the bridegroom. John the Baptist has served his role, to announce to Israel the Messiah is coming, be prepared and then point and say He is here. John tells his disciples that it is time for him to decrease while Jesus increases, making God’s message about the kingdom of God known.
John’s message about everything coming from heaven is a message Jesus wants us to know. The Father is the giver, He gives life, the means to sustain life, the means to enjoy, love and bring happiness into our life and other’s. Most importantly the Father gives what we need to help those in need. I am always surprised when someone asks me for a helping hand, some food, money or clothing, I always have the means to help. Of course there are times when I don’t have money but it is in these moments I will be asked for something I do have. Everything we have comes from God, we are stewards and God trusts us to steward His gifts for creation and one another.
