Luke 1:32 – December 8, 2021

He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, Luke 1:32 NABRE

Luke shares the story about an angel announcing the birth of the Son of the Most High, a title for God. The angel says God will give Him the throne of David His father. King David was anointed by God and is Israel’s greatest king, he built an empire that stretched from Egypt to Mesopotamia lasting forty years. God promises David his kingdom will be firm forever and his throne established forever. (see 2 Samuel 7:16)  The Jewish people await an anointed king, the son of David, the angel tells Mary her son will be that king. The angel is announcing the fulfillment of God’s promise. Jesus her son will bring many conversions, but He is not the king expected by the Jews. Jesus’ presence and declaration of God as His Father is met with much unbelief and ultimately He threatens the power structure and is put to death. But death does not destroy Him, He resurrects and leads many followers today, His kingdom without end, in fact in many ways is still beginning. Jesus’ kingdom depends on its constituents, they work to bring the coming of the kingdom honoring the King. It is a kingdom that puts priority on people and relationships, not holdings and power. It is a kingdom where even death has no power and love is its greatest attribute.

The angel is God’s messenger announcing a King and Kingdom. Mary is an instrument in fulfilling the promise of a kingdom where all followers of the King are needed to bring the kingdom to fullness. God desires all His children’s participation in kingdom building until the kingdom’s fullness is complete. The angel announces a future of hope, and we are hopeful receivers of the message.

Are you in Jesus’ kingdom? Are you working to bring fullness to the kingdom?
