Luke 19:42 – November 18, 2021

saying, “If this day you only knew what makes for peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes.” Luke 19:42 NABRE

Jesus is approaching Jerusalem, a final entrance and when He sees the city (seeing it from a distance) He wept over it. He knows the people will undergo suffering and this weary’s His heart and He weeps for the city and the people. Jesus seems to go into a lament for the city, addressing the city itself, He speaks to it about knowing what makes for peace but it is hidden. Jesus is the ultimate peacemaker and He is coming to the city. He comes as a priest, prophet and king and He could bring the people and the city to the only peace they will ever require. Jesus has come to lead people to a path of peace but the city will ultimately reject Him and His ideal of peace. Of course it involves human hands rejecting Jesus and the peace He offers, but at the same time it fulfills God’s plan for a new covenant and a new kingdom. Jesus will go on to lament over the city which will be sieged and destroyed for the final time. Jesus is bringing God to the city and is offering redemption. The people will reject this redemption but God finds a way to make redemption occur without acceptance from the people. God’s plan is fulfilled and Jesus prediction of a city that knows no peace comes to fruition.

We often think we know God’s plan, we know the best path to fulfill God’s will. But Jesus makes it clear that the people around Him and in the city are completely unaware what He is offering. God’s plan depends on the selfishness of human nature and human’s do not disappoint when it comes to selfishness. We cannot know God’s mind until we spend long moments communicating with Him so He can fill our heart with love.

Do you want the peace of Jesus? Is God’s plan hidden from you?
