Luke 16:8 – November 5, 2021

And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently. “For the children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light.” Luke 16:8 NABRE

A steward is called before his master for improper handling of accounts. A steward is responsible for utilizing and managing the resources of the person who is their master. This steward was doing a bad job and was about to be fired. Concerned about his future he makes a plan that will help him survive without falling into poverty or having to work jobs for which he has no skills. The steward is commended for acting prudently, for planning the means to survive and thrive. Even though the steward is mostly dishonest, this one aspect of his character is commendable. Jesus uses this as an opportunity to have us reading, consider our future, planning for what it will be like for us in heaven, inviting us to prudently plan for our heavenly future. Jesus has invited His disciples to store up treasure in heaven, indicating the future in heaven is not binary, get in or don’t, there is much we can plan for our time in heaven. Jesus teaches we should plan for a heavenly future by giving away wealth and privilege now making deposits in heavenly treasure.

Jesus compares His followers to the person who works for success in the world, saying the people of this world are more prudent about storing up worldly treasure so as to make their own life comfortable. Followers of Jesus tend to be more concerned with people and giving then worldly wealth. This comparison is an indication from Jesus that followers can learn something from these worldly planners, particularly about storing treasure for a heavenly future.

Are you storing treasure in heaven by giving away today? Do you even think about your heavenly future?

Followers of Jesus tend to be concerned with people and giving not worldly wealth. Comparing to worldly people, Jesus followers can learn something about storing treasure for a heavenly future. Click To Tweet
