Mark 12:36 – June 4, 2021

David himself, inspired by the holy Spirit, said: “The Lord said to my lord, ‘Sit at my right hand until I place your enemies under your feet.'” Mark 12:36 NABRE

Jesus has been confronted by opponents and they seem to have run out of questions, courage or energy to continue to challenge Him. Jesus Himself initiates a question, asking how King David can claim the Messiah as His Son. Psalm one hundred-ten is viewed as a prophecy about the Messiah, a royal descendant of David who will revive a monarchy that has long ceased and restore sovereignty to Israel. It is a hopeful psalm for the Israelites and Jesus uses it here to frame His question about the Messiah, the one who will sit at the Father’s right hand. Before He quotes the psalm, Jesus acknowledges authorship of the psalm is King David and He acknowledges David and the psalm are inspired by the Holy Spirit. The implication is the psalm and by extension all scripture, is ultimately attributable to the Spirit of God and therefore has divine authority. Jesus is affirming the Christian belief that the bible is the inspired word of God. It is written by human hand, but those writing are moved by the Spirit to capture the living word that God desires exists for all to read. God wants a record telling the story of the fall of humanity and the coming of Jesus to lift humanity back into glory. The scriptures are that record, and thankfully we have them available to us today so we will delve into them regularly.

Many will require precise application of scripture to live according its word. Scripture for others is an influence moving them towards God, living the essence of its message. Scripture is alive and no matter our education, faith, trust or understanding we can be influenced by its word.
