Jesus has been speaking about coming from Heaven and that if we eat His flesh and drink His blood we can have Jesus dwell in us. This teaching challenged most of whom heard Jesus and they left Him and His mission. Jesus turns to those He has chosen to be His closest followers, the inner circle of the twelve and asks if they want to leave as well. Peter makes a confession of faith in Jesus that becomes famous over time. By asking to whom shall we go, Peter affirms that apart from Jesus there is nothing truly worthwhile. Jesus’ teachings are the words of eternal life. Peter continues that they have come to believe and are convinced that Jesus is the Holy One of God. By calling Jesus the “Holy One of God” Peter is professing Jesus’ divinity. In John’s gospel only the Father, the Holy Spirit and Jesus are called holy. Peter is always a voice speaking to us who have doubts. Peter is impetuous and rather carefree, but in this moment his thought is considered and careful. All that Peter has seen and heard has shaken many, forcing many to leave Jesus but he is convicted that Jesus is the One. Jesus is the Holy One from God and in the twelve disciple’s lives and ours He brings a message of love and movement to the kingdom of God.
Peter is confident in Jesus even though many, many hear Jesus speak and leave. Peter dedicates his life to the message of Jesus and to provide us with a message allowing us to have faith in the Holy One of God. Jesus as our indwelling spreads His holiness, we accept the divine and become divine who are called to work in His movement.
